The HF Custom Process: From an Idea to The Ring

September 22, 2026

An engagement ring is one of the few things you’ll choose with the intention of wearing it every single day, for the rest of your life. So, we don’t think the process of creating it should feel like picking a few options from a dropdown menu and hoping for the best. At Hannah Florman Fine Jewelry, every custom engagement ring starts from scratch—with you. Whether you’ve had the exact ring saved in your camera roll for three years or your entire vision is “I know I want something classic, but not boring,” our job is to take what you know, figure out what you don’t, and turn it into something that feels completely your own. Here’s what that actually looks like.

The Spark

It Starts With a Conversation

Before diamonds are sourced or designs are sketched, we talk.

Our custom process begins with a phone consultation where we get to know you, your partner, your timeline, your budget, and whatever you already know about the ring.

And no, you do not need to arrive speaking fluent diamond.

Maybe you know she loves elongated stones but couldn’t tell a radiant from an elongated cushion. Maybe you have a Pinterest board with 75 rings that somehow all look completely different. Maybe you’ve secretly taken photos of her jewelry while she wasn’t looking. Or maybe you truly have no idea where to begin.

That’s exactly what this conversation is for.

We’ll talk through stone shapes, setting styles, metal preferences, lifestyle, inspiration, and the little details that will ultimately make the ring feel personal.

Try Everything On

One thing we’ve learned after designing a lot of engagement rings: what you love in a photo and what you love on your hand aren’t always the same thing.

Enter the sample try-on.

This is your chance to actually experience different diamond shapes, proportions, settings, band widths, prong styles, and silhouettes before making any decisions.

Sometimes the shape someone was positive they wanted gets replaced the second they try something unexpected. Other times, trying everything on simply confirms that the ring they’ve been dreaming about really is the one.

Both are equally helpful.

Custom doesn’t mean you need to know exactly what you want from day one. Part of the process is figuring it out.

‍

Your Diamond Curation

Once we understand what you’re looking for, we begin sourcing diamonds specifically for you.

Rather than handing you an endless inventory to sort through, our team sources and hand-selects a small curation of stones based on the characteristics that actually matter for your ring—shape, proportions, quality, personality, and budget.

Because two diamonds can look nearly identical on paper and completely different in person.

This is where the human eye matters.

At your design meeting, we’ll walk through the diamonds together, compare them side by side, explain what you’re seeing, and help you understand where it makes sense to prioritize—and where it might not be worth paying more.

Our goal isn’t to sell you the diamond with the most impressive certificate. It’s to find the diamond that makes you stop looking at the others.

‍

Then We Design Around Your Stone

Once we’ve found the diamond, the ring starts taking shape around it.

This is where all of those conversations, screenshots, try-ons, saved photos, and tiny preferences start becoming an actual design.

Maybe you want a classic solitaire, but with a slightly chunkier band. A six-prong setting instead of four. A hidden detail only the two of you know is there. A setting inspired by an heirloom, but reimagined to feel more modern.

We’ll develop the ring concept and refine the details until everything feels right. From there, CAD renderings allow you to see the design from every angle before it ever becomes metal.

‍

From Rendering to Real Life

Once the design is approved, your ring moves into production.

The setting is created specifically for your diamond and finished by hand, with every proportion and detail considered along the way.

This is the part of the process you don’t always see—but it’s one of the most important.

The prongs. The polish. The way the diamond sits in the setting. The thickness of the band. The balance of the ring on your hand. The tiny finishing details most people may never consciously notice, but that collectively make a ring feel right.

After final quality control, the ring is ready for the best part: leaving us and becoming yours.

The Point of Going Custom

Going custom isn’t about making a ring complicated for the sake of making it different.

It’s about having a reason behind every decision.

You’re not choosing from someone else’s idea of the perfect engagement ring. You’re building yours—with guidance from people who do this every day.

Some of our favorite rings have started with incredibly specific visions. Others have started with, “Honestly, I have no idea what she wants.”

Both can end in exactly the same place: with a ring that couldn’t belong to anyone else.

And that, to us, is the whole point.

Personally sourced gemstones, thoughtful details, and a tailored setting just for you.
